The district has a good agricultural base and a reasonably good infrastructure of various facilities. Agriculture is the mainstay of population. More than 70% of the population is based upon agriculture related purposes. The three harvests of the district are known by their usual names, Rabi ,Kharif and Zaid. The Kharif or rainfed crops are sown in June –July and harvested in Sept. - Oct., while Rabi are irrigated crops sown Oct. - Nov. and harvested in Feb.-March. The main crop of the Kharif is paddy and of Rabi is wheat. Other main crop are Maize , Jowar , Bajra and Arhar and other main Rabi crops are Barley ,Gram, Peas and Masoor. The largest area under individual crop is occupied by paddy which is cultivated in an area of more than 102,240 hect in 1997-98. In the year 1997-98 Jowar was sown in 958 hect., Bajra 4,173 hect., Maize 137 hect , Urd 150 hect., Moong 88 hect., Masoor 9,385 hect., Peas 1,693 hect. and Arhar in 2,494 hect. |
